Members Present: King,Grimes, McKillip, Wallace, Bledsoe, Donaldson. Also present: Jessica Pease Donaldson moves to approve minutes from February meeting, Grimes seconds. Motion passed. Discussion around virtual meetings - McKillip prefers virtual. Donaldson is open to in person but in a larger space, but ok with virtual. Wallace agrees with Donaldson. A letter of request was made by NAACP for changes to occur within city police department and city council. The commission wrote a letter of support for the NAACP’s requests. Documents were presented to this commission for review and approval. McKillip moved to approve the letter of support for NAACP’s letter, King second. Grimes abstained from the vote. Motion passed. McKillip proposed discussion around encouraging landlords to be more encouraging and proactive about welcoming people of color to apply for residence by making statements of support around the Black Lives Matter movement. Discussion occurred around where and how these statements could be made. King proposed that further conversation occur with other organizations including the NAACP and realtors to see if more support is gained within our community. McKillip and King agreed to work on drafting the letter. There was a potential discrimination complaint that was pending, however it was never filed. No further action needed. No upcoming community events or marches/protests were identified. Remarks: Grimes appreciates support from the commission to continue conversations regarding changes that need to be made in our community and action that is taking place. She will continue to update the commission of any upcoming NAACP events. Next meeting is August 6, 2020 at 6:30. It is pending as to whether it will be in person or virtual. King made motion to adjourn, Grimes moved, Wallace seconded. Meeting adjourned at 7:07pm.
