Commission member remarks
● King discussed with Attorney Nolden offering diversity training to staff. Nolden wanted to
look into the training that had been done in the past. King will provide him with this
information. King would like to request that a training be offered to City employees
regarding diversity and implicit bias even if it is not presented by the Community
Relations Commission.
● COVID 19 town hall discussion is on hold until Grimes can meet with a representative
from Illinois Department of Public Health. McKillip offered to provide information about
setting up mobile vaccine clinics.
● King sent the commission the City of Galesburg data on gun violence provided by Chief
Idle. McKillip felt we needed more detailed information about the data. Wallace reported
that a task force was now created within the city to address this violence. Wallace has
met with Attorney Karlin regarding the increase in gun violence and profiling black and
brown people. Schwartzman reported that he hopes the task force will not be a long term
need regarding why it was created. The task force is a targeted attempt to rid the
community of violence. Wallace recommended a town hall. King recommended an open
community conversation where we can discuss how we can all play a part in addressing
the increase in gun violence. King will reach back out to Chief Idle and request more
detailed information regarding the data he provided as well as reach out to community
partners to see if there is interest in participating.
● Donaldson and McKillip created a draft of data that can be distributed throughout the
city. Grimes suggested that education be included in the graphics. Would like to review
the narrative parts and add in contact information. It was requested that everyone
provide feedback to King so McKillip and Donaldson can continue to finalize the
document.
