Meeting called to order on June 3, 2021 at 6:04pm by King.
Members Present: King, Grimes, Kelley, Donaldson, McKillip, Lopez. Mayor Schwartzman. Also
present: Alderman Sarah Davis, Attorney Brad Nolden, Staff Liaison Jessica Pease.
Grimes moved to accept May minutes, second Lopez. Minutes accepted.
Mayor Schwartzman remarks
● Mayor commented on his support of the Commission and that a new liaison would be
established soon. Major is prepared to move forward with racial equity work and asked
that the Commission determine what role they would like to play in this effort.
Commission member remarks
● The Commission reviewed the draft document of data about Galesburg. It was
requested that data about education be added. Donaldson to update by July meeting.
● Attorney Nolden reported the City of Galesburg has a new training system which
includes trainings on Preventing discrimination and harassment as well as workplace
diversity and inclusion. Members of the Commission were offered the opportunity to
preview the trainings. McKillip and Lopez to view the trainings and provide the rest of the
Commission with an outline of the information discussed. There has not been a decision
about whether elected officials will be required to attend.
● Complaint of Discrimination: The commission reviewed the complaint. It was
recommended to pass the complaint along to the state and federal level. There was
discussion around the limitation of what can be managed at the city level. King to
respond to the complainant. The Commission would like to review the rental licensure
code. It was recommended that language be added to the rental ordinance that prohibits
discrimination as it is not currently in place. Grimes, Lopez and Kelley to work on this.
● The commission discussed their role moving forward and agreed to look into current
practices and policies within the City regarding discrimination and equity.
● Public Events: Donaldson discussed the Mobile Museum of Tolerance. King discussed
Pride Month events
