Meeting called to order on December 2, 2021 at 6:12pm by King.
Members Present: King, Donaldson, Dabale, Grimes, Kelley
City Liaison: Pease
Review of minutes. Grimes motioned to approve minutes. Donaldson seconded.
Chairman’s remarks
● King sent the document to Mayor Schwartzman. He is unable to attend the meeting
tonight, but did agree to review the document regarding the Commission’s plans for the
future.
New Business
● Grimes would like to set up a meeting with Dr. Asplund, District 205’s Superintendent, to
address concerns within the district. Questions from the Commission are as follows:
○ What supports are in place to increase the teaching of a diverse curriculum that
acknowledges the history of black and brown students? What supports are in
place to encourage educators to utilize a new diverse curriculum?
○ There is a committee in place for school improvement, but what supports are in
place to support the minority students who reported lower test scores?
○ Is there a Parent-Teacher Association and is there a required commitment to
participate?
○ Is there a current system in place for educators to notify parents when their
students are not doing well academically? Does the system have the capacity to
translate to multiple languages?
● Community Events
○ Holi-Gays is a free event at Cherry Street this weekend
○ Kwanzaa Event is December 19th and is free and open to the community.
