Public Comment
●Mr. Spinks, owner of The Grand Tap, was present to discuss his complaint he submitted
last month. He states that a customer requested a taxi and upon calling the taxi
company, the driver stated that he did not pick up from the location requested. Mr.
Spinks attempted to call again and the taxi driver stated that he did not want ‘his kind’ in
his taxi. King explained the process of the Community Relations Commission. Ms.
Dabale called the taxi company on April 19, 2022 and spoke with the owner of the
company, Mr. Corley. Mr. Corley stated the reason he does not pick up at The Grand Tap
is because the customers who call from the location are often not present when he
arrives to pick them up and that customers who know him and call him directly he will
pick up without any issues. In reviewing the Taxi Cab Operator License Form from the
City of Galesburg there is not a nondiscrimination clause. Grimes states that she is
concerned that this is the second ordinance that does not have a nondiscrimination
clause. It was requested that Ms. Dabale follow up with the following questions: Ms. King
would like to know what other establishments are not being visited and whether or not
the business is notified if they will not be picking up patrons. Ms. King would like to know
how payment is accepted. Ms. Grimes asked if there was any record that Mr. Corley has
picked up patrons from The Grand Tap in the past. Ms. King asked for a list of patrons
that Mr. Corley has picked up in the past. Also if there is a policy on not allowing other
companies or people to use their taxi service.
●Jeannette Chernin and Darla Krejci were present to discuss their complaint regarding
voter locations. Ms. King read the letter that was submitted to the Commission. Ms.
Chernin read the list of reasons they are being denied the move of polling locations. The
focus of the complaint is precinct 5 & 6 and gaining more accessible polling locations.
Ms. Krejci and Ms. Chernin believe that it is voter suppression by refusing to move the
polling location to a more accessible location. Ms. King recommends that the
Commission look into this process. The Commission agrees to move forward with
looking into this complaint. Ms. King will FOIA the minutes from the Galesburg Board of
Elections Commissions meetings for the past 8 months as well as request a list of
regulations for polling places. The next meeting is on June 6, 2022 at 7am and Grimes
and King will attend.
Donaldson made a motion to adjourn at 7:51pm, Grimes seconded.
