Commissioner Remarks
Robinson- Important to keep regular meetings and do outreach to continue to be an asset recognized by
the community. Teach the city about the history. If we don’t teach the city about the history then we are
doomed to repeat. We have a rich history of the underground railroad and supporting the Latinx
community. We don’t have a budget though.
King-Secor- Concerned about systemic racism not existing comet from former mayor.
Viggiano- What are we empowered to do?
King-Secor- Education throughout the community. Mediating concerns of discrimination throughout the
community. File a complaint with us. Contact both sides. What is going on? What happened? How can
we avoid this from happening in the future? Education pieces. Presented Racial Taboo. Facilitators did
small group discussions. Black history month education contest for students. Struggled post pandemic to
get back into the community and get back to the work we were doing before. Collaborated with other
entities possible.
Viggiano- Perhaps opportunities for collaborating with Sandburg. It is difficult for me to think of
outreach without a budget.
King-Secor- We could send a budget request. Spring time is budgets so should be soon.
Pease- Budget season is now. It should be sent soon.
King-Secor- 17th or 24th send individually to avoid group conversation.
Viggiano- Opportunities for distributing printed material at Sandburg.
Pease- Whatever we make should be in English, French, Spanish.
Viggiano- We should pay translators to address systemic devaluation of those skills.
Robinson- There could be benefit to volunteer translators. ADA humans rights commission of Illinois can
facilitate ADA accommodation. Human services group.
Robinson- If a police officer gets a complaint about them, do they come to us?
King-Secor- No. Short answer, but there is possibility to support.
Pease- The police does their own review.
King-Secor- We were able to provide space for the person who felt the city and police department was
not supporting their concerns.
