HomeMy WebLinkAboutF&P Meeting Minutes 062722 BOARD OF FIRE & POLICE COMMISSION Operating Under Council – Manager Government Since 1957 City of Galesburg Board of Fire and Police Commission • Public Safety Building 150 South Broad Street • Galesburg, IL 61401 • 309/345-3729 • www.ci.galesburg.il.us TO: Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Chairman Robert Fulton, Commissioner Thomas Peters, Commissioner Diane VanHootegem FROM: Courtney LaFollette DATE: June 27, 2022 SUBJECT: June 27, 2022 Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Meeting Minutes The regular meeting of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners was called to order by Chairman Robert Fulton on Monday, June 27, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Those present in person were: Chairman Robert Fulton, Commissioner Thomas Peters, Commissioner Diane VanHootegem, City Attorney Bradley Nolden, Police Chief Russell Idle, Fire Chief Randy Hovind, Secretaries Jenni Moser, Amanda Jennings and Courtney LaFollette. Public Citizen Comment None Approve Commissioner Peters motioned to approve the minutes of the April 18, 2022 regular meeting. Commissioner VanHootegem seconded the motion. Minutes approved. Correspondence None Old Business Chief Hovind advised Firefighter Stevenson will be graduating from the academy Thursday, June 30th and will start working on each shift for one week. Bruner, Cooper and Zuck is looking into making the Brooks Street fire station co-ed. There are possibly 4 retirements coming up between now and the middle of next year. The DCEO grant has been received for the replacement of the training tower which will be built at a different location on the same property so the old tower can still be used in the meantime. Hovind will receive confirmation later this year as to whether the department will be allowed to hire 3 additional firefighters (1 per shift) that will be able to attend the spring academy. Chief Idle advised Railroad Days concluded on Sunday with only one issue. The department is currently down 8 officers. All 6 of the current applicants already passed their preliminary evaluations. The possibility of 12-hour shifts may be an option in the future. Recruitment- Commissioner Fulton advised that he believed the math tutor session helped and would like to continue to offer it in the future since the math portion of the test always seems to be the downfall. New Business IFPCA Seminar- Commissioner Peters advised that a new bill if passed, would require all law enforcement officers obtain a bachelor’s degree with a major or minor in social work. Applicants who submitted their applications by September 1st will be eligible to participate in the math tutoring session. Police promotional written exam will be Tuesday, August 30th with interviews to follow on September 6th and the assessment center (tentatively) for the week of September 12th. A Police swear in ceremony is scheduled for Monday, August 8th at 10:00 a.m. as well as a Police promotion on August 22nd. Fire Entry level testing will be held on September 17th with interviews to follow on September 27th and 28th. Chairman Fulton advised that he received the Commissioners Manual which includes testing, interviewing procedures, etc. Each commissioner was advised to read through the manual. There being no further business, a motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Commissioner Peters and seconded by Commissioner VanHootegem. Meeting adjourned at 10:47 a.m. The next regular scheduled meeting will take place on Monday, August 15 at 10:00 a.m. in the Administrative Conference Room, City Hall, Galesburg, Illinois.
