HomeMy WebLinkAboutF&P Meeting Minutes 06162025 BOARD OF FIRE & POLICE COMMISSION Operating Under Council – Manager Government Since 1957 City of Galesburg Board of Fire and Police Commissioners 150 South Broad Street • Galesburg, IL 61401 • 309.345.3729 • www.ci.galesburg.il.us TO: Thomas Peters, Chairman, Commissioner Sandy Wood and Commissioner Bernie Cowan FROM: Brittni Carr, Public Safety Clerk DATE: June 17, 2025 SUBJECT: June 16, 2025 Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Meeting Minutes The regular meeting of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners was called to order by Chairman Thomas Peters on Monday, June 16, 2025 at 10:01 a.m. Those present in person were: Chairman Thomas Peters, Commissioner Sandy Wood, Commissioner Bernie Cowan, Police Chief Kevin Legate, Fire Chief Randy Hovind, Fire Deputy Chief Brock Schmitt, Fire Deputy Chief/Fire Marshall John Seitz, 911 Coordinator Amanda Jennings, Secretaries Jenni Moser and Brittni Carr. Public Forum (Citizen Comments) None Approve Commissioner Cowan motioned to approve the minutes of the April 21, 2025 regular meeting. Commissioner Wood seconded. Motion carried. Correspondence None Old Business The police department will have 53 officers on staff after the retirement of Lieutenant Paul Vannaken. Chief Legate is currently working with the City Manager regarding promotions. The sergeant and lieutenant promotions are tentatively expected to be in place by the new pay period of July 21, 2025. The deputy chief position will have to be appointed. Chief Legate expects to know more at the end of the week. The police promotional assessment testing is set for the week of September 29, 2025. One officer has a previously scheduled vacation. Discussion was held on the matter with unanimous approval that all candidates must be physically present during the scheduled timeframe. The fire department currently has one new fireman on staff and he is doing well. Two more are starting soon, which will alleviate some of the overtime. Chief Hovind would like to see more diversity within the department. There are currently 33 candidates scheduled for testing, none of which are females. One vacancy exists but will be filled at a later time.
