HomeMy WebLinkAboutF&P Meeting Minutes 08182025 BOARD OF FIRE & POLICE COMMISSION Operating Under Council – Manager Government Since 1957 City of Galesburg Board of Fire and Police Commissioners 150 South Broad Street • Galesburg, IL 61401 • 309.345.3729 • www.ci.galesburg.il.us TO: Thomas Peters, Chairman, Commissioner Sandy Wood and Commissioner Bernie Cowan FROM: Jenna Hunt, Public Safety Clerk DATE: August 19, 2025 SUBJECT: August 18, 2025 Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Meeting Minutes The regular meeting of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners was called to order by Chairman Thomas Peters on Monday, August 18, 2025 at 10:02 a.m. Those present in person were: Chairman Thomas Peters, Commissioner Sandy Wood, Commissioner Bernie Cowan, Police Chief Kevin Legate, Fire Deputy Chief Brock Schmitt, Fire Deputy Chief/Fire Marshall John Seitz, 911 Coordinator Amanda Jennings, Secretaries Jenni Moser and Jenna Hunt. Public Forum (Citizen Comments) None Approve Commissioner Cowan motioned to approve the minutes of the June 16, 2025 regular meeting. Commissioner Wood seconded. Motion carried. Correspondence None Old Business The police department has two officers that will be finishing FTO along with two officers that will be graduating from the academy on Thursday. There has been one resignation due to personal reasons. The department is planning on hiring a lateral officer on September 2nd at 10:30 a.m. After this swear in the department will be back at 53 officers. The eligibility list will be down to one candidate after the swear in. The fire department hired three new firefighters in the spring, they just had their 6-month evaluation and all doing well. They are currently one firefighter short from being fully staffed. The department is hoping to hire in the spring. There was 40% who did not show up at the testing who put applications in. They have a list of ten candidates from the testing. The department does not currently have any retirements coming up for this year, but may have some possibly next year. The police promotional assessment test is scheduled on September 2nd at 6:00 p.m. with the oral interviews scheduled on September 9th. There will be assessments done by a third party at the end of the month. There are 11 individuals scheduled to complete the testing. Commissioner Cowan seconded the motion. Motion approved. Commissioner Cowan motioned for Commissioner Wood to become the secretary. Chairman Peters seconded the motion. Motion approved. The police department will be starting a testing cycle for police entry level officers. There will be two testing dates; September 27th at 9:00 a.m. and on September 30th at 6:00 p.m. There has been an increase of individuals showing up to the testing with the two options than just having one option. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for October 14th, with documentation being due on October 28th, and the final list being posted on October 31st. ILFPCA Seminar is on November 7th this year in Lisle, Illinois. The seminar will be attended by Chairman Peters, Commissioner Wood, and Commissioner Cowan. Amanda will be away at the IPSTA conference on the next regular scheduled October meeting date on Monday October 20th. She asked if the meeting could be rescheduled. The board agreed to moving the date to Monday, October 27th at 10:00 a.m. Adjournment There being no further business, a motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Commissioner Cowan and seconded by Commissioner Wood.
