GOLF ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES, AUGUST 22, 2023

Meeting Called to Order: Meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Chairman, David Selkirk
Roll Call:
Present: Rodney Bunch, Stan Devlin, Jerry Reynolds, Paul Sandborg, David Selkirk
City of Galesburg:
Director of Parks and Recreation – Elizabeth Varner, Alderman – Steve Cheesman,
Parks Superintendent- Don Miles, Greenkeeper-Matt Miles, Golf Professional – Bryan Luedtke
Minutes: July 2023 minutes were approved, with the addition of Director of Parks and
Recreation being in attendance, with motions from Paul Sandborg and Jerry Reynolds.
Greenskeeper Report:
Greenkeeper, Matt Miles, reported on maintenance of the golf course. Staff finished spreading
mulch around the ornamental grass areas. There was also additional rock placed in the areas
with the worst shoreline erosion around #15 pond. Matt reported that a repair was performed
on a main supply line for the irrigation system near the putting green, and on a main supply line
in the rough in front of #11 tee.
Golf Professional Report:
Chairperson, David Selkirk, provided the Golf Professional Report showing a review of July.
There was a new record in rounds with 5,212, which is 1,000 rounds above average and
$82,511 total in revenue. Merchandise and concession sales are doing well.
Bunker Links hosted the Club Championship with 75 golfers signed up. There was a 50%
increase in participation compared to past years. Despite a rain delay on Friday, everything
worked out with no delays over the course of the weekend. Play was a bit slow with
foursomes. Golf outings in August have included the Junior All-City Tournament which has 26
players. There were 24 ladies who enjoyed the Bixby Cup outing, and 92 players for the Elks
Club Golf Outing. Abingdon Legion Golf Outing was outstanding with 140 players. Upcoming
events include the Cubs vs. Cards.
GHS Golf season has now started for the season.
Old Business: Chairperson, David Selkirk, asked about the fencing extension on #7 Tee.
Superintendent of Parks, Don Miles, explained that money is still in the budget for it, but is
waiting for additional information on a potential driving range expansion before proceeding.
New Business:
David Selkirk asked for a Memorial Brick sidewalk update. Don explained that another section
of the sidewalk needs to be removed and this is scheduled for September 12th when the course
is closed for aerification. Stan Devlin stated that Golf Shop staff have asked about a touch
screen for use at the counter. Don will check with the City Information Technology (IT) staff to
see about the possibilities.
Director of Parks and Recreation, Elizabeth Varner, discussed the budget, specifically golf
related items, along with Don Miles. She stated that 2024 may be a tight year but golf still has
good items in the budget.
