Golf Commission Minutes, September 24, 2024
City Hall, Galesburg, Illinois
Meeting was called to order by Dave Selkirk at 4:00 pm
Roll Call: Present: Members: Dave Selkirk, Stan Devlin, Bob Reedy, Rodney Bunch, Jerry
Reynolds, Greenkeeper Matt Miles, Parks and Recreation Director Don Miles
Council Liaison Steve Cheesman
Absent: Golf Professional Bryan Luedtke
Minutes: Minutes from the August meeting were approved, with a motion from Bunch, 2nd by
Reedy.
Reports:
Parks and Recreation Director:
Director Miles reported that the budget process is ongoing, currently in the prioritizing and
reduction phase. The bid opening for the proposed drainage work for this year will be
tomorrow.
Council Liaison:
Steve Cheesman reported that he is awaiting the budget work session that will happen next
Monday night to get his first glimpse at the budget to see what is proposed so that he can make
sure that Parks and Recreation receives the funds needed to keep improving facilities.
Greenkeeper:
Greenkeeper Miles reported that.
Greens were Verti cut in one direction.
Greens were aerated by pulling soil cores. The cores were pulverized, and sand was added to
fill in the holes. Fertilizer was applied to aid in recovery.
Fairway and approach areas were overseeded as necessary.
An irrigation leak was repaired between 9 and 18 tee and another behind the 4th green.
Forestry and Park employees removed 1 dead and 3 decaying trees off the golf course.
Tees have been aerated by pulling soil cores. The cores were broken up with drag mats and a
Verti cutting machine.
Storm clean up took place most recently.

Golf Professional:
Director Miles reported that there were 4961 rounds played in August, a new record for
August. Revenue was up over $15,000, compared to 2023. All categories were up in revenue.
CUBS vs. CARDS had 108 players, $1620 in merchandise credit paid out to the winners. Golf
outings hosted were, All City Best Ball, 18 teams, low turnout. Jumping J’s, 17 foursomes down
from the 21 signed up, due to the weather delay that day.
Upcoming tournaments include GHS Invitational on Saturday September 28th, Peoria Sand
trappers on Thursday October 3rd, Year-End Superball on Saturday October 5th, GHS Baseball
Outing on Saturday October 12th, and the Centennial Cup on Saturday October 19th.
Old Business:
Chairman Selkirk stated that Citizen Comments will be kept to three minutes with no discussion
between commission members and the public during that time.
New Business:
Member Reynolds inquired about possibly changing the day of the week of the meetings. After
some discussion, it was decided to keep the meetings at its current day and time, the fourth
Tuesday of the month at 4:00 pm.
Selkirk mentioned how he has witnessed the high school teams not replacing divots on the
course and asked that the teams be reminded to do so before the Invitational on Saturday.
