Tree Commission Minutes, March 8, 2021
City Hall, Galesburg, Illinois
Meeting was called to order by Tony Oligney-Estill at 4:00 P.M.
Roll Call: Present: Members: Pat Trant, Ann Pennington, Debbie Steinberg, Jane Easterly,
City Arborist-Roy Flaig and Director of Parks & Recreation-Tony Oligney-Estill
Absent: Millie Allen
Minutes of February 8, 2021 where approved.
Arborist Report:
• The Forestry Division removed 5 trees in the month of February. For most of the month,
staff was plowing snow off roads.
• Roy plans to go look at available trees at various nurseries in the area and purchase trees
for the City tree nursery in the next couple weeks.
• There have been 5 requests to plant memorial trees at Lake Storey this spring.
• Tony will email out the Arborist report prior to the meeting starting in April.
Old Business:
• Roy and Tony have not had a chance to drive around the northeast part of town to see
where new terrace trees could be planted this spring. Roy and Tony have scheduled
March 18th to accomplish this task.
• Roy has communicated with Ms. Ferren several times since she stopped by the Tree
Commission meeting in February. Roy has removed some dead limbs off her Locust tree
up to this point. Roy told Ms. Ferren that he will come look at the Locust tree in the
spring when he can better determine if the tree is still living or dead.
• Tony recommended not to have a large gathering at the Arbor Day tree planting since
COVID is still here. Tony suggested we plant one tree at the dog park and another tree on
the south side of town. Any suggestions on where to plant a tree on the south side of town
is welcome.
New Business:
• The City was awarded the Tree City USA designation for 2020. All the usual
requirements to be awarded a Tree City USA for 2021 apply. Tony will have the Arbor
Day proclamation read at the April 19th City Council.
• Tony and Roy will discuss if there is anything the City can or will do to be a part of the
Library’s Big Read program. Jane said planning for the Big Read has been underway for
awhile and would need any suggested plans as soon as possible.
Citizen Comments:
• None.
