Tree Commission – March 13, 2023
City Hall, Galesburg, IL
Meeting Called to Order: Meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Ann Pennington
Attendance: Members Present:
Jane Easterly, Ann Pennington, Dan Thompson, Bill Sime, Pat Trant,

Don Miles, Superintendent of Parks
Absent:
Elizabeth Varner, Director Parks and Recreation
Minutes:
Minutes of the February 2023 meeting were approved with the following corrections.
Adjournment time should be 4:53 pm. Additional comments should have read that Deb
Steinberg has left the Knox College Arbor Day Chapter and that Tina Hope may have
taken the position.
Forestry Report:
Don Miles passed out the report. A question was asked about how many Ash trees
were left to remove. Don reported that there were less than 30 left to remove. Don also
mentioned that the Pickard Road Oversized Brush drop off site would be opening for the
season on Friday March 17th. The days of operation are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Old Business:
Discussion was held about the tree tags for Standish Park. A motion was made, and the
vote was unanimous to go forward with the order for the two-inch round tags with
Standish Park, the common tree name, and a number to identify the tree, on the tags.
The emphasis was to have the tree name be a larger font than the park name and
number. Bill will send out a version of the tag before the order is placed.
Dan Thompson stated that he suggested to Elizabeth about shrinking the borders on
the Champion Tree form so that there would be more room on the lines to fill out the
form. Don stated that he would remind Elizabeth about it.
Ann stated that she would hold off on discussing the Knox Chapter for Arbor Days until
the next meeting, since there was not much information to work with.

New Business:
Ann asked about Arbor Day proceedings and what involvement the Tree Commission
members would have. She also said that The Burg should be contacted about a picture
and story for that day. More discussion will happen at the April meeting to finalize
details.
