Tree Commission – August 14, 2023
City Hall, Galesburg, IL
Meeting Called to Order: Meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Ann Pennington
Attendance: Members Present:
Ann Pennington, Bill Sime, Dan Thompson, Pat Trant
City of Galesburg:
Elizabeth Varner, Director of Parks and Recreation
Absent: Jane Easterly, Don Miles -Superintendent of Parks
Guest: None
Minutes:
The minutes of the July 2023 meeting were approved with motions from Pat Trant and
Bill Sime.
Forestry Report:
A Forestry report was provided for July showing 13 tree removals and 47 trees trimmed.
There were 362 loads of brush dumped. It was noted that 222 trees have been planted
as part of Project 350 since August 5, 2023.
Old Business:
None
New Business: Chairperson Ann Pennington, brought up the tree list showing the
original tree species. List A showed the list of original tree species at Standish Park
Arboretum, and List D showed a list of tree species to be added to the arboretum as space
allows. This was interesting information to see the original list. Jim Cueno will be
updating the list once the information is provided. Ann brought the Arbor Day newsletter
from March / April 2023 talking about the Tree City USA Growth Awards. She pointed
out outstanding examples of growth in Glenview and Springfield, IL. Ann suggested that
Ameren be asked to join the Tree Commission for Arbor Day next year. Elizabeth Varner
will reach out to Ameren regarding this, while explaining they did reach out to plant trees.
Bill Sime noted that a big limb is down in Standish Park from the storm. Elizabeth will
inform Forestry to take care of it. Bill also likes how the tree canopy at the park was
raised.
Pat Trant explained that Chris Enroth has warned against Maple tree plantings due to
infestation. He stated that Tom Simkins has been diversifying the trees and would like to
know what trees would be recommended to plant. Elizabeth will check with Forestry.

Standish Park:
The Tree Commission walked to Standish Park to see the Tree Tags which have since been placed
on the trees. Positive comments were made regarding the tree trimming and raising of the
canopy. The tree limbs that are damaged, and a split tree were noticed from the storm.
Additional Comments:
Bill Sime needs a Sugar Maple on the Terrace to be looked at by Forestry.
