Tree Commission Minutes, February 12, 2024
City Hall, Galesburg, Illinois
Meeting was called to order by Ann Pennington at 4:02 pm
Roll Call: Present: Members: Ann Pennington, Pat Trant, Dan Thompson, Bill Sime, Jane
Easterly, Interim Park and Recreation Director Don Miles
Absent: none
Minutes: Minutes from the December meeting were approved, with one change, followed by
motions from Pat Trant and Bill Sime. The lone change was a correction in the spelling of the
city of Bettendorf.
Forestry Report:
The Forestry Report was provided for December and January. Pat Trant asked if past year
numbers could be added to the report so that there would be a way to gauge productivity from
one to year the next. Interim Director Miles stated that he would see if the numbers could be
added to the report.
Bill Sime asked about the amount money left in the Project 350 account. Interim Director Miles
stated that the amount Tom Simkins provided in December was correct and that there was
money for tree purchases in 2024. Funds will need to be procured for future years since Tom is
two years ahead of schedule.
Old Business:
The question was asked about the Disc Golf Course taking place at Lake Storey Park. Interim
Director Miles stated that he had met with the organizer again in January. The meeting was for
measuring the length of the holes and more discussion about what tree s or material was to be
removed as this project progresses.
A question about the Arbor Day planting at the new Library was raised and it was decided to
discuss and finalize at next months meeting.
New Business:
Ann Pennington asked about the possibility of a memorial tree being planted in the future for
Gary Johnson, former City Arborist, as he is in very poor health. Interim Director Miles stated
that there would be a tree planted in his honor. Ann stated that she would find out what his
favorite tree is and a possible location for planting could be from his family.
