HomeMy WebLinkAboutTree Commission Minutes 040824 Parks and Recreation Department _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Page 1 of 2 Tree Commission Minutes, April 8th, 2024 City Hall, Galesburg, Illinois Meeting was called to order by Ann Pennington at 4:00 pm Roll Call: Present: Members: Ann Pennington, Pat Trant, Jane Easterly, Bill Sime, Interim Parks and Recreation Director Don Miles, Tom Simkins- Project 350 Absent: Dan Thompson Minutes: Minutes from the March meeting were approved, with a motion from Bill Sime, seconded by Jane Easterly. Forestry Report: The Forestry Report was provided for March. Pat Trant commented on the totals at the right did not add up correctly. Interim Director Miles stated that will be corrected for next month’s meeting. Tom Simkins gave an update on Project 350. He stated that we now have 293 trees in the ground after the 11 trees were planted Saturday at the new Library. There are 8 more to go in once more landscaping has been completed. We know have 75 different cultivars out of the 293 planted which adds diversity to our tree canopy. Tom also discussed areas for future plantings. Old Business: A map showing the layout of the new Disc Golf Course at Lake Storey was passed out. Interim Director Miles explained that there are only 4 holes that will affect trees in the wooded areas. At this time there are only small scrub trees being removed with plans to reassess after the first cut has been completed. Interim Director Miles explained that he told the disc golf team about certain sized trees not being removed to keep the wooded areas as natural looking as possible for the future. After some discussion, the Arbor Day planting was set for Friday April 26th at 10 am at the new Library. Interim Director Miles will coordinate a press release to be sent out inviting the public to attend this year’s event. The area for Gary Johnson’s memorial tree has been marked in Standish Arboretum. Ann Pennington will speak to the family about setting a date for the planting, so that they can be present. Another walk through will be needed to figure out which tags are missing before another order is placed. Citizen Comments: None.
