Tree Commission Minutes, June 9, 2025
City Hall, Galesburg, Illinois
Meeting was called to order by Ann Pennington at 4:00 pm
Roll Call: Present: Members: Ann Pennington, Pat Trant, Bill Sime, Jane Easterly, Dan
Thompson, Arborist Brandon Phillips (arrived late due to a tree call), and Parks
and Recreation Director Don Miles
Absent: none
Minutes: Minutes from the May meeting were approved by a motion from Jane Easterly with a
second by Bill Sime.
Forestry Report:
The Forestry Report was presented by Arborist Brandon Phillips. Brandon explained that stump
removals were going fine until the stump grinder broke down. Ther are about fifteen stumps
left to grind once the new stump grinder is purchased. The removal list is growing to about
eighty trees.
Old Business:
Ann and Bill have been working to update the tree map at Standish. They have been checking
trees for proper identification and whether tags are still legible. They have found that most tags
have been damaged by squirrels and some are missing. It was decided to discuss with the tree
tag supplier before purchasing more tags to make sure a different tag should be ordered that
could withstand damage better. Once all information has been confirmed, the map will be
updated and presented to the commission before being publicized.
New Business:
Dan Thompson asked how someone is supposed know about the ‘Champion Tree’ form that is
on the website, without any promotion of it. Director Miles stated that he would discuss with
staff to determine that proper avenue to get the information out to the residents. He also asked
who receives the form once it has been sent in. Director Miles will ask IT.
