Tree Commission Minutes, July 14, 2025
City Hall, Galesburg, Illinois
Meeting was called to order by Ann Pennington at 4:00 pm
Roll Call: Present: Members: Ann Pennington, Pat Trant, Bill Sime, Jane Easterly, Dan
Thompson, Arborist Brandon Phillips, and Parks and Recreation Director Don
Miles
Absent: none
Minutes: Minutes from the June meeting were approved by a motion from Jane Easterly with a
second by Dan Thompson.
Forestry Report:
The Forestry Report was presented by Arborist Brandon Phillips. Brandon explained that the
stump list has been eliminated except for stumps in park areas. Going forward as trees are
removed the stumps will be removed soon after to avoid complaints about stumps not being
removed soon enough.
Old Business:
Director Miles explained that the Champion Tree form is on the website linked to the Tree
Commission and if a form is filled out it does get sent to him. The plan is to get the form linked
to other areas of the website, so that it is easier to find for our residents.
Bill and Ann updated members about the tree map and tags at Standish Arboretum. A list was
provided of the damaged tags, and the variety of trees. The next step is for Brandon and his
staff to confirm a few questions about a few trees. Once theses items are confirmed, the map
can be updated, then tags will be ordered. A discussion about what tags to order for the next
round to avoid damage was held as well.
New Business:
Tom Simkins gave an update that the City has already received a $2,000 grant and was informed
of another grant worth up to $15,000 that has been awarded that will coming in the near future
to be used to purchase more trees.
